High Speed Burnishing Floors

Burnishing is a highly recommended interim maintenance procedure to remove scuff marks, soil build up and to maximize the shine of existing floor finish. This high speed buffing process is done to keep your floors looking great in between re-coats.

A Good Base Coat of Floor Finish is Necessary Before Burnishing

CAUTION – MAKE SURE YOUR FLOORING CAN WITHSTAND THE HEAT CAUSED BY THE FRICTION OF HIGH SPEED BURNISHING EQUIPMENT.  ALWAYS TEST IN A SMALL AREA FIRST.

A well established base coat of a floor finish with Ultra High Solids (UHS) is necessary before high speed burnishing can be done.  If you have no idea what type of finish exists, try using a 380 RPM buffer with a red pad instead.

Clean the Floor Before Burnishing

We dust mop and wash floor with a neutral cleaner, using a mop or auto scrubber before burnishing.

Choose the Right Burnish Pad

Based on the type of floor and condition on the floor, we select the proper pad and burnish compound.

Most burnish pads are white or tan. Some contain hog’s hair while others are pinkish in color (called eraser pads).

We use pads that are rated for your floor surface and the speed of the machine that we’re using.

Now It’s Time to Burnish

Burnishing is high speed buffing with a special chemical compound. Generally, machines at 1500+ rpm are considered burnishers (some machines go over 3000 rpms).

After a thorough cleaning, we apply a special chemical compound in a small area and burnish the floor until it shines. Most of our burnishing chemicals contain polymers that help fill in small scratches and increase the effectiveness of the pad.

Mild Friction Brings Back Deep Gloss

The friction from the burnish pad causes the floor finish to heat up, spread out and then bond again when it cools. This process produces a deep shine and makes the floor finish more resilient.
